Modernism Week Aluminaire House Poster

The prefab Aluminaire House, designed by architects Albert Frey and Lawrence Kocher, made its debut at the 1931 Allied Arts and Building Products Exhibition at Grand Central Palace in New York City. Constructed from machined components like steel posts and corrugated sheathing, Aluminaire was intended as a prototype structure to be mass produced to alleviate the housing crisis in (war-ravaged) cities. More than 50 years later, architecture critic Paul Goldberger of The New York Times, declared Aluminaire "among the pivotal works of modern architecture in America" in a column on March 8, 1987. Aluminaire was assembled, dismantled, and reassembled three times before landing at its permanent home adjacent to the E. Stewart Williams-designed Palm Springs Art Museum.
